Walking

The Calderdale Way, a circuit around Calderdale, was pioneered by local civic trusts and groups who came together under the umbrella of the Calderdale Way Association. The main and link routes to the valley bottom are designed so that they can be completed in short stages. The walk encircles Halifax, Hebden Bridge and Todmorden, following old packhorse ways across the open gritstone hillsides with sections of traditional stone causeway, passing through hillside villages and old mill towns on the banks of the River Calder. There are numerous link paths which connect the Calderdale Way to the valley floor. There are medieval settlements at Lumbutts and Mankinholes, and Withens Gate, where the Pennine Way crosses. A short diversion along the Pennine Way takes in the popular walk to the 120ft monument, Stoodley Pike.

The Pennine Way is a National Trail in England. The Trail runs 267 miles (429 km) from Edale, in the northern Derbyshire Peak District, north through the north Yorkshire Dales and Northumberland National Park and ends at Kirk Yetholm, just inside the Scottish border. The path runs along the Pennine hills, sometimes described as the “back bone of England”.

Todmorden & Stoodley Pike

Todmorden is a border town. The Pennines above the town divide Yorkshire’s River Calder from its more modest namesake, Lancashire’s Calder. There’s an obvious destination for walkers in Stoodley Pike, the prominent obelisk first erected on the hills above the town in 1814. Intrepid visitors can clamber up to the viewing platform (be prepared to grope your way in the pitch black). The Pennine Way will bring you here whilst, close at hand, are several other long-distance trails including the Calderdale Way and the Todmorden Centenary Walk which encircles Todmorden. Moorland packhorse trails will take you to other fascinating landmarks, including mediaeval Mount Cross and the rocky outcrop known as the Bride Stones. More gentle options include strolling the Rochdale canal towpath or discovering the woods above Centre Vale Park.

Hebden Bridge, Mytholmroyd & The Calder Valley

Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd are towns which welcome walkers – and that’s official. Both of these Calder valley towns were pioneers in the national Walkers are Welcome scheme, and you’ll find waymarked trails from both town centres that will take you straight out into the heart of the stunning Pennine landscape.

This was the land where poet laureate Ted Hughes grew up. Beautiful moorland locations associated with the poet include the isolated standing stone known as Churn Milk Joan and the impressive Lumb Falls.

Both the Pennine Way and Pennine Bridleway are close at hand, waiting to be explored. Or why not tackle the Calderdale Way, a fifty-mile high-level circuit of this part of the south Pennines?
